Multiplying Money

The Discipline of Investment

Introduction: Three Words

Most people stop at the first word. They earn, they spend, and next month they start again. A few reach the second word and learn to manage what comes in. Very few reach the third. Earning creates income. Managing creates surplus. Multiplying creates wealth.

"The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all." (See Ecclesiastes 9:11)

From Earning to Multiplying: What Separates Income From Wealth?

Think of the three words as three floors of a building. Most people live on the first floor all their lives because nobody told them there was a staircase. Earning. You trade time and effort for pay. Managing. You spend with a plan and keep some back. Multiplying. You put the surplus to work so that it produces more, even while you sleep.

Jesus told a story about this. A master gave three servants money to look after. Two put it to work and doubled it. The third dug a hole and buried his, and the master called him wicked and lazy (See Matthew 25:14-30). The man was not a thief. He was safe. And safe was not what the master asked for.

The Five Levels in Ecclesiastes

Solomon names five kinds of people: The swift. They rely on speed. The strong. They rely on power. The wise. They build a system. The understanding. They see how structure works. The skilled. People look for them. Labour produces income. Wisdom produces wealth.

"Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings." (See Proverbs 22:29)

The Shift: Labour or Ownership?

Multiplication requires a move from depending on labour to owning assets. A salary is good, and Scripture honors hard work. But if your whole income is your own hands, you are one illness away from zero. Your money should have a job. Spread it. Do not rush. Count the cost.

Time and Chance: Season and Position

Time refers to season. Chance refers to positioning: being in the place where the opportunity lands. Opportunity shows up when season and position meet. Isaac shows us how this works. There was a famine, and he stayed where God told him to stay. He planted there, and the harvest was a hundred times what he sowed that same year (See Genesis 26:1-12).

Guided by the Spirit: How Do You Discern the Time?

"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye." (See Psalm 32:8)

Pray before you invest. Take counsel. Wait for the green light, then move. Waiting for the Lord is not the same as sitting still. When you have peace and the numbers make sense, act.

Conclusion: Do Not Bury It

Multiplication requires three things: wisdom, positioning and discernment. Remember why God gives the ability to build wealth: so that He may establish His covenant (See Deuteronomy 8:18). Wealth is a tool in the hand of a steward. Do not bury what God has put in your hands. Put it to work.
